The FDA isn't going to stop with quinine. It is in the midst of a campaign against other 'unapproved' prescription products, medicines that have been in wide-scale use since before the modern regulatory system existed. These medicines were 'grandfathered in,'meaning they could be sold without having to go through the clinical trials necessary for a new drug. The FDA seems to be determined to end this 'grandfathering,' and you will soon see a wide variety of cough and cold products disappear from pharmacy shelves, just like most quinine has.
