This is for 2 reasons.
1. Every time the economy expands rapidly. The lines between economic classes expands. These numbers are not indicitive of actual poverty by global statndars. I guarantee 95% of these people have a home, air conditioning, a car, cable tv, and don't miss meals.
2. I work for a major University and I am involved on research of the Families First program and I can guarantee peoples position is more about the choices they made rather than government responsibility.

3 Steps to not be poor
1 - Don't do drugs or abuse alcohol
2 - Don't have kids out of marriage
3 - maintain ANY gainful employment with a good attitude and a willingness to aspire.

100 percent of the people that do these things are not poor.

Willhelm, thank you for your comments, but I fear they are somewhat simplistic. There is an entire class of society known as the "working poor." Are you suggesting that all of them take drugs, and have children out of wedlock?

The majority of poor people are not lazy lay-abouts who pump out kids and quite their jobs, or sit around and smoke joints or shoot smack all day. The reasons for individual poverty and varied and many, and the last thing they need is to be judged or blamed for their misfortune. Sure, there will always be a small percentage of people who try to scam the system or are just plain "users." But we need to help those people who legitimately require our assistance and ...

Well Zasel, the facts are pretty clear. Almost all the poor have either 1. not finished high school 2. had kids out of wedlock 3. Cannot hold a job, or 4. Abuse alcohol and/or drugs. It is as simple as that.
I do not think we should not help these people, I am just stating the reality.

It is as simple as that.
And how much did being born into poverty contribute to all of the above? Breaking the cycle of poverty is not simple, and will never be accomplished by political non-leadership relying predominately upon "trickle-down" economics.
