His Bigotry and that of his Administration is a legend. I know it is too late for Shrub to grew a heart or a conscience and that he learned his compassion from his mother, Barbara, who said Katrina survivors in Texas were better off because they had been so poor in New Orleans. This from the man who wanted to be known as a compassionate conservative. If this is compassion, I want none of it. Shame on you Shrub!!!

The White House, in a statement warning of a veto, said state and local
criminal laws already cover the new crimes defined under the bill, and
there was “no persuasive demonstration of any need to federalize such a
potentially large range of violent crime enforcement.”
This is a pretty standard anti-federalist argument. I'm almost compelled to say I agree with the statement, but agreeing with this White House makes me feel icky.

However, using this rationale to argue against adding a category for homosexuals to the hate crimes laws, but not against other categories, seems to me like nothing but bigotry.

Well, Bush is the Supreme Bigot and sadly it does not surprise me in the least.
