I couldn't have been judged by my pastor. My family belonged to a very conservative Catholic parish in an ethnic neighborhood, and my father always dragged us to the mass that had the sermon given in Polish. By the time the Polish masses ended, I'd given up on going to church anyway, so twelve years of exposure to those sermons did absolutely nothing for me.

I'm not impressed by McCain's "dialing down" - because he's unleashing hate ads at the same time. Only thing he's dialing down is his live appearances. Where his face doesn't show - in TV ads, in Cindy's speeches, in Palin's speeches - it's still full-bore slamfest.

He knows slams draw negatives, so he's acting the public gentleman and sending the others to do the tarring.

We'll know he's serious if the ads change.
