I think when the peasants were starving, it was ideal to be overweight, now that the poor are becoming obese because of cheap fatty foods, it's fashionable to look as thin as possible.

When the peasants were starving there was no way that they could become fashionable by being overweight. The poor of today don't have to become obese. There are alternatives to bingeing on cheap fatty foods They could easily cut down on their calories and fat intake.
People who develop eating disorders, like Karen Carpenter, suffer from a distorted view of their own bodies. It isn't neccesarily that they want to look like a runway model, it's just that when they look in the mirror they see themselves as fat.
Also, many people that are thin, like Twiggy, are not starving themselves, they are just naturally thin. Usually that changes when they get a little older and their metabolism sl...

woman were intended to have a voluptuous body, as that of a ripe fruit, what would be the reason for Renoir to paint three woman who looked like skeletons.

Thank you kankamuso for this perspective.

My daughter is very tall and thin. She eats all the time. Her metabolism burns it up faster than she can consume it. I was the same at her age. But it's amazing the amount of rude remarks she has endured. It's made her strong, but it's a damn shame she gets them. It's taken us years to get her to accept her height as something to be proud of. Now, she holds herself up, elegant, and strong. I'm very proud of her.

Perspectives change. During the Renaissance period there was no mass media to present the concept of the "ideal" woman. Voluptuosness was not only considered sexy, it was the sign of a good, healthy breeder. There are definitely women who tend genetically to thinness, as well as to thickness. A woman who is thin, will be judged as anorexic, just as a woman who is thick will be judged as an overeater. It's the judgement here that's at fault. I think the problem really, is that there is no media correlation for the "ideal man" based on weight.
