zasel says: This entry is impossible to clip effectively. It is a breakdown of Michael Medved's explanation of why slavery wasn't such a bad thing in America. Read the entire piece, but make sure you have a bottle of maalox nearby. This response to Michael Medved's article is a picture perfect example of the Liberal Left's frequent attempts to discredit, sensationalize and outright misrepresent anything coming from a conservative source. Not with rational arguments that actually address specific points in the material, but instead by using inflammatory, emotional and wildly nonsensical statements. For example, when Medved makes the SIMPLE point that... "1. SLAVERY WAS AN ANCIENT AND UNIVERSAL INSTITUTION, NOT A DISTINCTIVELY AMERICAN INNOVATION."... by quoting historical references ... I must agree with you zasel... I did need maalox reading Jillian's post.... comprised of nothing but vitriolic rants and gaseous, non-corporeal arguments. Hi Knslyr, I appreciate and understand your comments regarding this piece. There were parts that I thought were a tad over the top as well, but overall I find Mr. Medved to be a somewhat intolerant, bible thumping, homophobe, which bother me greatly. However, I do not consider him much of a threat to the world considering that very few people in the mainstream give a crap what he says or does. I looked at several of your clips and find your interesting to be quite varied and intelligent. I assume you or of the conservative bent, and that's great, as I would be horribly bored of we all agreed on everything and held the same exact priorities. I was politically extremely conservative up un... Ok...lets analyze what was said: Those who want to discredit the United States and to deny our role as history's most powerful and pre-eminent force for freedom, goodness and human dignity invariably focus on America's bloody past as a slave-holding nation.Wow, he sure needs to thump his chest doesn't he. Excatly what is he trying to prove here. The answer of course is a specific brand of American triumphalism, intoxicating. Of course, the French, the Spaniards and the Brits all thought the same way, at the height of their Imperial power. One thing is to be proud of one country, I would expect no less, but this serves no one. Also Medved is wrong, the slave traders, specially in the era when England made the trade illegal, though nothing of dumping their entire cargoes of human beings into the sea, still tied and chained to drown. In many ways, Medved piece proves not American uniqueness, but American historical commonality with the policies of other nations. The U.S was willing to use the trade and exploit it, even after it was baned on moral grounds, so much so that the southern states rebelled to maintain the "right" own other human beings. 5. WHILE AMERICA DESERVES NO UNIQUE BLAME FOR THE EXISTENCE OF SLAVERY, THE UNITED STATES MERITS SPECIAL CREDIT FOR ITS RAPID ABOLITION.Nope, England and even Mexico have greater claims on that score. Pleased to make your acquaintance zasel. I always appreciate the diversified discourse of stimulating and thought-provoking conversation. And while I certainly have many beliefs of which I am passionate about, I'd like to think I would consistently entertain differing philosophies. As James Russel Lowell said... The foolish and the dead alone never change their opinions. Zasel, I actually clipped Medveds points a couple of weeks ago, or so. You should look them up. Also, read comments. You calling him a bigot simply points out yours. The way you use this word (bigot) illustrates you really do not know what it means. You just like to use it for your political, propagandist purposes. Medved article is reduced to the phrase: "But Ma, everybody did it!" Actually, It is " Ma, it happened, everyone responsible or victimized is dead, let's move on" I guess its easy to "move on" when you want to hide from your own history. Of course, its not just what happened then, it also what happened since. My own history started in 1968, so I'm not hiding from anything. Thats rather short sited. And not surprising. Your as much a creature of history as anyone else. Ignore it at your own peril. Perhaps you should comment a little more specifically. Your comments are hilarious to me, given my background and the fact you have shown yourself to be a historical neophyte. I have shown myself to be a historical neophyte? Interesting that you have shown no such proof. |
