disenchantedcitizen says: When God said “Give and you shall receive”, I’m pretty sure He wasn’t referring to money. People like the Copeland’s, who take advantage of other people’s belief in God in order to make themselves rich, are disgustingly poor examples spiritual leadership. They make a money game out of religion in order to enrich themselves. Then they buy private airplanes and boats, vacation in Hawaii, take cruises in Alaska, wear designer clothes and jewelry made of emeralds and diamonds and tell their flock “Fear will make you stingy” so keep on giving and giving and giving. One member said “If God did it for them, he will do it for us”. Well here’s a news flash for you, if you could get thousands of people to give you their money then you too could live prosperously. ‘Spiritual pickpockets’ is a very apt name indeed. The Copelands are just Cult Leaders, like nearly other televangelist. While Jesus did, indeed, say to give of your money, disenchanted citizen, the difference is that a wise Christian knows the difference between donating to a church charity fund, or the local food bank, or a medical charity, and sending money to an extravagant shyster on TV who promises you Salvation, Joy, and a replica of the Dead Sea Scrolls for your "donation" of $100 or more. My dad once said to me that you know an honest pastor when you see his car leaking fluids, or him taking the bus. Dumb. This is like saying 'non-believers' believe in anything that involves weed and astroglide... What the hell is this about anyway? On this one rare occasion I happen to agree with you darkforce. It's a miracle! Definitely agree with darkeforce. There's a real big difference! Another miracle! I agree! While Jesus did, indeed, say to give of your money, You are correct df, I should have said he didn't intend us to give our money to charlatans like these people. PS/ Jesus never encouraged people to give to an institution. He encouraged people to give to those in need, particularly widows and orphans. Nothing has changed. The church is supposed to be a clearing house. Instead it's become a fat and rich and ravenous wolf masquerading as a sheep. And the American-bred prosperity doctrine is an abomination to everything Christ taught. Unfortunately it's another American 'export' that has contaminated the world. But our God who sees all promises that he will judge all and we, the church/Christians, will be the frist to be judged. We will reap what we have sown. Exactly. If you believe in the biblical concept of tithes (I personally do), then they don't need to be to a religious institution. I don't have a church, so I give my 10%, and whatever else I can to local charities that I see are making a difference in people's lives in my city. It doesn't have to be about giving a specific amount, though. It's just part of the principle of living the philosophy of Christ, and doing your part to being your brother's/sister's keeper at every opportunity (instead of, say, giving a certain percentage of your paycheque each month). It's a principle that's hardly exclusive to Christianity, for sure. Someone's always ready to put their hands out when people talk... |
