In USSR the environment described in 1984 was for a reason and one reason only - to be in power and keep that power. Here we have a very different situation. The people accused of doing some things are going to be gone in a very short amount of time. So - that's one big difference between the scenarios. Second is why it's being done. However, as much as I appreciate and understand your concern, I don't believe this is what's going on here. In USSR the environment described in 1984 was for a reason and one reason only - to be in power and keep that power. Here we have a very different situation. The people accused of doing some things are going to be gone in a very short amount of time. So - that's one big difference between the scenarios. Second is why it's being done. You may not consider the threat from the current enemies serious enough or credible enough, but I certainly do... mostly due to 9/11, with plenty of other physical evidence (and we're not even discussing the rhetoric coming from the world of islam here). It wasn't just talk and posture - we're talking deeds here, clear and vivid.

I think that threat can undermine the US much more than things that make it appear like we're moving into the 1984-type era.
