Brower crashed when I posted my considered thoughts about 5 mins ago.

Substitute Christianity or Judaism for Islam in the clip title and lose absolutely no poignancy or relevance.

"but our past global ideological enemies - Nazism, fascism, militarism and communism - all failed."

Given our current fetishism of war, weaponary (Gears of War...) and budgetary expenditure, a visitor to our planet may be unable to discern a failure of militarism.

Pretty much all western governments found accomodation with "Nazism...." during the last century rendering the "our" in that sentence at best ambivalent - they may typically have been the enemies of people but certaintly not corporations, governing elites or entrenched economic interests.

I missed all that radical Christianity.
Perhaps your revisionist plot would allow you to dream something up. I live in the real world where the actions and words of the jihadists speak louder than anyone in the media with an article posted on RCP. Your last paragraph shows the depths of your illusions and inability to understand how the process of appeasement fails. You'd rather see it as " accommodation.

I'm not sure that Pinochet, Galtieri, the ruling class under apartheid or the various US proxies in Latin America during 70's/80's were appeased. I don't feel this is regarded as revisionist.

Clearly though none of this is directly relevant to the clip.

Why Radical Islam is a great question that has been asked at different times in world history in different ways - why do societies (or minorities significant enough to matter) become radicalised?

Understanding and addressing the socio-economic drivers behind radicalisation (yes, I know - easy for me to say) is surely a better long-term solution than relying on our "overwhelming military strength".

What in the world is radical islam? If you mean terrorism, say it man! But the Islamic courts Union in Somalia are no terrorists, and have no proven links with alQaeda. They depend on public support, because they have no international backing, and brought about a peace that the interim government has destroyed- again- in a matter of days. And why is it Ethiopias business to interfere with the workings of Somalia? Because America says it is. Clear as that.
