It doesn't get any more "founding father" than Washington. A Christian himself, he didn't seem to want to enforce his religious hegemony on others. I would think he'd have a solid idea on what principles this nation was founded.

The vast majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were practicing Christians, not secular humanists. Why such a need to define their race? I'm American Indian. Many of my ancestors walked the trail of tears from West Georgia. My grandmother was 1/4 Cherokee. She didn't teach or bring me up to hate the white man. When Republican President Abraham Lincoln ended slavery, he wasn't bitching about the race of the Founding Fathers.

Because religiously-rooted bigotry is behind the fight against the basic civil right to enter into a marriage contract for gay Americans.

Because the words "under god" were not a part of the Pledge of Allegiance until the mid '50s, to distinguish us God-fearing Americans from the godless commies.

Because religious fundamentalists want to make abortion illegal. It's a decision between a woman and her doctor. And because religious fundamentalists are taking up arms and murdering doctors and bombing their clinics.

Because nearly every major Republican candidate opposes contraception and would probably make it illegal if they could.

I'm not against Christians. I'm against living under some form of Christian Sharia.

So no, this is not me poking around in the bushes, looking for people of faith minding their own business to poke with a stick.

This is about pushing back against a political agenda that wants to define what it is to be American in terms that exclude me and people like (& unlike) me.
