"The symbolism of his action at Christmas time is
striking - a foreign Muslim coming to the aid of three Jews in an act
of kindness and cooperation.
It's sad that this is what this story boils down to. But good news, none the less. A step in the right direction.
It just makes me sad that rather than seeing it as an act of human kindness, it is the contended religious background that makes the story worth reporting. It is almost portrayed as an act of human kindness despite religious differences, rather than regardless of differences.

A Muslim Bangladeshi student is to be honoured by the mayor of New York on Wednesday for helping three Jewish people who were being beaten up.
Is he being honoured because he aid fellow citizens? Or because he was a Muslim and they were Jewish?

A real good Samaritan would aid anyone - Christian, Jew, Muslin, or none.

I don't like the flavour of this story. It doesn't smell pure to me.

I see what you're saying but we'll take whatever is positive in these crazy times.

uuuhh,.... a little depth of perception; a little nuance in understanding,...... ...........................reveals:
It is no "insight" to point out that a big deal is being made in the mentioning of, and because of the fact that the good man is a Muslim and the people he came to the aid of are Jews. I sense the skeptical view here is that it is patronizing to Mr.Askari, and maybe to good Muslims in general, that this is the feature element of the story. Hopefully he doesn't feel that way. Also, let good Muslims speak their feelings on it if they feel that way. This is reasonable.
In the current climate, don't you think it is valuable to highlite stories that can restore the image of M...

Righthand, I see your point. But I am hoping to look beyond the cynicism of this current climate we live in... hard to do... I too, have swallowed cynic pills from time to time and have blurted them here (not that your comment was a blurt...mine often are...).

I hope that clipping this enables many people to stop judging people by any -isms they may hold to their heart, and see that this is the real spirit of holiday...the real spirit of humanity....peace transcending ideology.

I don't care if the media had ulterior motives when they highlighted the story. I care that the guy did a good deed and responded when someone was being abused for their racial/cultural/religious heritage and more t...

Thank you to those who understood my reservations about this story. Did Hassan Askari inquire as to their faith before aiding the attacked? Of course not. So he was a good Samaritan.

Everything was good about this story until the twin evils of America - the media and the politicians - got their hands on it. Now it attempted to show the oddity of a Muslim aiding Jews. His bravery - some might say foolhardiness - of ONE adding THREE is far more noteworthy than a Muslim aiding Jews.

You are so used to being manipulated by your media like this that it's very difficult to see what you might call my cynicism.

This highlighting of a Gentile aiding a Jew(s) highlights a much bigger problem than...

Actually it was 3 people being attacked by 10, so it was EXTREMELY brave.

"Around 10 people were attacking the three Jews after an argument had broken out.

"As the quarrel turned progressively more violent, scores of people on the train ignored the fight and didn't want to have anything to do with it," said Marc Scheier, a rabbi from the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, who presented Mr Askari with a bravery award earlier this month.

"Mr Askari - like the Good Samaritan - was the only person brave enough to intervene. "
