NOTE: see that the command line:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1 -x

is wrong, it should be:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run -x

The complete name of the file

By the way, you can open a terminal (for see some stdout info printed by the apps, specially glxinfo) and execute 1 of the following apps (they are normally installed in Ubuntu):

glxdemo
glxgears
glxheads
glxinfo

In glxinfo see the line that say something like:
direct rendering: Yes

If it say yes, then you are done.

remember reinstall the drivers with each kernel upgrade

 I recently upgraded a video-card from a 6800 to a 8800gts. nvidia-glx-new worked with the 6800-card, but the machine locked up completely when starting X on the 8800.
