Genes could still explain why some are geniuses and others are Terry Wogan. But even that I doubt.

The most recent evidence from the Human Genome Project has forced molecular geneticists and psychiatrists to admit that there are no single genes for mental illnesses. Their fallback position is that it is a complex interaction of many different genes, although the evidence does not yet give them much support. Nor do I believe it ever will.

Early nurture and social processes are far more important – how else can you explain the fact that one quarter of citizens of English-speaking nations suffer mental illnesses whereas half that proportion do so in mainland Western Europe?

I'm funny because I prefer happy feelings to being miserable. What makes me miserable is when others don't return a gift of humor.

It seems to me that most people want me to share in their misery and try to project it on me. I on the other hand try to project humor as a sheild against their misery. Sometimes they win, most times I do.

When I laugh and joke around I don't dwell on my problems. I work very hard to raise the spirits of those around me. When I am down it just seems that everyone else is down too.

Even a comedian needs a laugh every now and then.

THAT is humour to me. Humour keeps my head above water. It gives me new eyes to see. New ways to cope. It's defensive, as well as disarming. It's the sugar that helps the medicine go down. It's sun, where there is only rain. It paints the world in colour, where there is only grey. It feeds your spirit...

And it makes me laugh too. *LOL*
