Indeed, the founding fathers had more criticism of democracy than praises, and the term is found no where in the Constitution. Instead "majority rule" was established in 1861 when the Yankee majority overthrew the Constitutional restraints (e.g. State's rights, 10th amendment) and provoked a secession, which was only turned to a Union by force of arms. A Union by Force can hardly be considered a government "of the people, by the people, for the people", or by consent of the states.
