I also wish they would have opted for OpenOffice, but this is a good development nonetheless.

I use OpenOffice myself since StarOffice wasn't free before. Thanks for the clip and link- now I can try it out and see which one I like better!

It's somewhat strange that they did it, considering they have their own Documents... but I guess since they don't have offline figured out yet for those, and people still want to do things offline, that's probably why. Plus is POs MS, which seems to be one of their goals.

I think Google 'Documents' can import the StarOffice format so the integration between the two works similar to importing a MS Word document. And you should be able to export your 'online' document to a MS Word, StarOffice, HTML, or RTF file.

I like my version of OO. Why would I want this?

Because it's now in Google Pack, skwirlinator... come on!

No, seriously, you wouldn't. If you use and like OO - continue with that, no compelling reason to switch to Star Office.

For people who don't have anything yet or wondering what to get into, especially not very computer savvy ones - it gives them a bunch of stuff in one package (read: simple, and that's all they're looking for).

Check out Google Docs prior to 'shooting' anything

Thanks Sage. I find Google Doc really really really slow, especially because some of my documents are hundreds of pages long.

Alanocu,
Of course Zoho has already released a tool last year that enabled integration of their online suite of applications with Microsoft Office, but it is obvious at this point that Google pretty much despises Microsoft.
Help me. Does this mean, if my friend send me a Microsoft Word/Excel documents, i can easily open it, edit it, and do whatever i want with StarOffice?

If you answer yes, well, i'll give this a try. Been using MO 2003 for long.

Yes, you will, but you can also do the same using Zoho's software and Google Docs... but remember, when you open those Word docs - your other software will open them with 'despise'

Disadvantages of StarOffice vs Microsoft Office

* Import/Export can never be 100% perfect for all the more complex and obscure features of Microsoft Office. Microsoft constantly changes them to prevent compatibility and to force upgrades. StarOffice is generally more compatible with Microsoft Office than Microsoft Office is among its different versions. Note: StarOffice's ability to import of Microsoft PowerPoint slide shows is weak compared to it's ability to import Word and Excel documents.

* Macros and Windows automation features do not work automatically (and some don't work at all). If they did, StarOffice would be as virus prone as Microsoft Office.

I've had trouble importing large documents into Google Docs. It chokes if the file size is over a certain amount.

My docs weren't that large probably, because I haven't had any issues yet, although mostly I create new stuff then convert my Word docs into it. After all, unless you REALLY have to have online access to the doc, it doesn't take much sense to convert it from Word to Google Doc, then back to Word to give it to someone, might as well do the whole thing in Word.

I'm sure they probably have some limitations and bugs like anyone else (we certainly know MS does), but so far I'm most impressed with Google Docs in terms of their abilities and collaboration/versioning that's better and simpler than anything from MS.
