ashleystar says: being dutch, my mama as well as my aunts have no shame. i've grown up seeing them naked about the house as though it was normal. my aunt monique is more than willing to show you her rack, even if you don't ask. the question here is - does everyone *want* to see us naked? probably not. i'm sure it depends. though, having little shame myself, i wouldn't mind being naked in my garden... I would like to think I had the choice, but the confidence to be naked in public would be an even better choice for me, I don't know though maybe if more people were OK with nudity maybe we would feel more at ease with it ! ! ! ashleystar says does everyone *want* to see us naked? The question is should the views of others stop us. If someone doesnt like me wearing yellow, red, pink, blue ... should they be able to stop me? Is it a issue of 'damage' (as in my being naked has actually damaged them in some way) or 'personal preference' (they just dont want me to be naked) The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran [i]And the weaver said, "Speak to us of Clothes." And he answered: Your clothes conceal much of your beauty, yet they hide not the unbeautiful. And though you seek in garments the freedom of privacy you may find in them a harness and a chain. Would that you could meet the sun and the wind with more of your skin and less of your raiment, For the breath of life is in the sunlight and the hand of life is in the wind. Some of you say, "It is the north wind who has woven the clothes to wear." But shame was his loom, and the softening of the sinews was his thread. And when his work was done he laughed in the forest. Forget not that modesty is for a shield agai... the question here is - does everyone *want* to see us naked? That is, perhaps, the inverse functional corollary of being afraid to be seen naked. As well, if someone sees you naked, they may feel the need to pass judgement on your attractiveness, which may be something they don't want to do. After all, a woman with a face generally judged unattractive could be a knockout unclothed, and then what would the shallow people who base their opinions on looks do? I'm all for public nudity. I think it is legal in Ontario & BC for women to go topless... Very few/none do.. but it IS legal... and I *think* due to our charter on equality that technically it is legal for a woman to go topless anywhere in Canada... but I think in most places the local police, etc would probably arrest you anyway & you'de have to fight the charges (though precedent has been set in Ontario many times). I'm all for nudity.. I think it is absurd that people are so damned prude about their bodies. Hell, I'd prolly go naked in some situations.. i hate wearing clothes.. now.. some people may not want to see me naked, but for that matter, I really don't like seeing some people at all Why Are Americans Afraid of Being Naked? Probably cultural conditioning, because I think most Americans cannot separate sex and nudity and are far more reserved. With regard to the issue of damage, I'm sure there are people who'd argue that they'd be irreversibly mentally damaged by seeing me naked. wow, great feedback peeps! so much better than my ban guns clip! @ashleystar; lol. Naked at the keyboard at this moment. I think the clip "Art Teacher Loses Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture" about sums it up for Americans. Ridiculous. Nice clip. This goes much deeper than nudity. It is not only showing -or seeing- naked people what causes weird reactions in Americans. Even the simple mention of body parts may cause unexpected reactions. The clips "No vaginas please, we're Floridian" (aka) The Hoohaa Monologues" and "Vagina Clip" clearly show it. Women all over Europe and South America, and now Asia too, wear thongs at the beach. Topless is not uncommon. Speedos are normal in the male world but not in the US. Naked breasts are not unknown on TV screens. Here in the US it will mean a steep fine and somebody being fired at the least. I truly believe Americans are somehow ashamed of their sexuality. Maybe I'm wrong but that is my perception. Why is that? After all, a woman with a face generally judged unattractive could be a knockout unclothed, and then what would the shallow people who base their opinions on looks do?@Bartending, LOL. I truly believe Americans are somehow ashamed of their sexuality.Knowsu, I don't think Americans are ashamed of their sexuality, but I really believe the average American woman is not satisfied with her body image, mainly due to the media's perceptions of beauty and I think the American male is starting to feel these pressures also. My daughter worked under a supervisor in PR on the Dove's campaign for real beauty. What was interesting about that campaign was that the data s... "Why Are Americans Afraid of Being Naked?" I don't remember who it was that said it, he was Australian, but he said it best; "I'm glad when our countries were founded, we got the convicts and you guys got the puritans." American is full of Puritans! So true. Baylor University in Waco, Texas, a baptist university didn't even allow dancing on campus until 1996. Funny though, they allowed dancing in theatrical productions and for their cheerleaders to do dance routines. Go Puritan U.! @boniface: *LOL* who couldn't love being naked? as you were raised in a dutch household, i was raised in a german one, same idea. my poor roomates. lol. Why should anyone be forced to see any of you naked in public LOL. Go naked at home but dont force others to have to avoid seeing your ugly ass my mother made a good point - if nakedness is unremarkable (like beaches in europe), you only notice if someone is extremely ugly or extremely beautiful. noone would notice me =) Hey, I appreciate a naked woman as much as the next guy (ok, maybe just a tad more) but if women walked around naked all of the time, most of the fun of seeing them naked would be gone. Thus... my vote is, let me choose which ones I want naked but limit the amount I can select from. This may be apocryphal, but I read somewhere that an Australian MP said, in reaction to the Clinton/Lewinsky matter, "Thank goodness we got the criminals and they got the Puritans!" The US has been called the "...most publicly prudish and privately lecherous nation on earth." (but don't ask me for the sources on this). Why is modesty always considered ridiculous or prudish? I think of it more as reverence for my body. My husband sees me naked, as does my daughter. Out of respect for myself and my family, I wouldn't feel comfortable being naked in public. I consider it a damn nice privilege to see my goods. I guess I'm a Puritan. Oh, boy. |
