More on polyphasic sleep (via link in clip)...

It is believed by advocates of polyphasic sleep that after undergoing
controlled sleep deprivation during an initial adjustment period, the
brain will start to enter the essential sleep stages much more quickly,
as a survival strategy. Once this adaptation is learned, the theory
goes, a comfortable and sustainable equilibrium of sleeping in only
naps can be established.

Boat racers have used
this technique to avoid dangers of sleeping for extended periods alone
at sea. Astronauts have also used this technique during extended
crises, and military personnel, especially Marines, have used this
technique in training.

When I was in the Army, we had to do this during field exercises. Being in the field 3 weeks at a time and having to alternate guard duty forces you into a new sleep pattern. However, no matter how hard I tried, waking up an hour after falling asleep sucked anyway! ;p

Certainly an interesting approach... I'm not sure I could do all of this as described, with 2 little kids thrown in, but certainly interesting approach.

over the past several months i have been working much longer hours than usual...yet, having implimented a number of the suggestions in this clip (mostly due to adamc's urging), i have not felt the least bit tired.

historically, i've been someone who could never get out of bed. however, i now set my alarm for 6:45am every morning and pop right up (literally...first thing i do every morning is read, comment and pop some clipmarks).

usually get to bed sometime between 1am and 2am so i'm getting around 5+ hours per night. happy to say that it's been more than enough.

top contributors to me getting more out of my day have been switching from soda to water, white bread to whole wheat, no ...

Does tied to clock make one more productive ? Humans are not machines, time spent is no measure of productivity. Maybe we all want to beat the machines that we built (faster, cheaper etc).

This is very interesting. I'm going to give it a try, because I usually wake up tired. I found that a day of extremely vigorous exercise will put me to bed nice and early, but I wake up still drained. I also am switching to a very regimented diet, where I only eat protein, fruit and vegetables with small amount of dairy/grains. The carbs are what actually kills me, even though they are a good source of energy, I can't last on carbs alone (which is a cheap way of eating). I'm going to have to spend more money on food now, but the trade off I think is better sleep.
