Don't believe, that Europeans have another opinion of their rulers! Against the statistics you can see, we have lesser freedom of press in the most European countries than in USA! Austria, Suisse, Britain and Ireland are aparted in my opinion. At the web you can see some alternate opinions. They never can be printed and sold in Germany! Here was jailed a social scientist for months, because a extreme left group had used some words in a flyer, they assumed to his work meant be connected. (is this english? I hope so!)

Journalists are watched by secret service, and because no one want to lose his job, isn't written anything of importance. Free writers have no chance, to publish any no-conform text. So is it no problem to find no obstraction of press-freedom. Public opinion polls are made how the result is wanted. That's no problem with the right questions. Many germans vote a party, that they don't really like, because they fear, another could be a greater evil, and a not given vote goes quasi to the party, that wins the poll. Many avoid to vote the left, because communist party was forbidden until fall of the wall, and the now founded left is a part of former east-german SED. So they fear to get a new East-German system, if they vote for the left party. I have some doubts too - but they are the only ones, who vote strictly against the war.
20 years ago we had quasi no political jokes here - now they come up en gros! And they are taken from the old jokes during the 3rd Reich or the GDR. This shows very good, how the people think about their rulers. In other european countries is the uprising nearer. Look at Greece, Portugal, Italy, Hungary.
