There is no law in Egypt under which the brothers could be prosecuted for opening their café during Ramadan. When they tried to defend their café, the brothers, all in their 30s, were arrested on Sept. 8 and charged with resisting arrest and assaulting authorities. They were held for 30 days before being released on bail, set at 12,000 Egyptian pounds (US$2,173).

At the trial last week, defense counsel showed a video of the incident shot by an onlooker as evidence of police brutality. The footage did not sway Judge Mohammed Hassan El-Mahmody, prompting some Coptic activists to claim religious zeal and prejudice as the true motives behind the convictions.

No one cares. Freedom of Religion was only a sacred trust here in the US...and not so much anymore.

But thanks for posting the article; it reminds some of us that we need to be praying for others and preparing ourselves.

Another reminder of what a theocracy looks like. And the wisdom of our founding fathers to keep church and state separate. They saw it all before, and addressed it first.

This is not about religion -- it's about being a bully. Anybody who follows his/her own religion in all honesty, irrespective of which religion it is, will not subscribe to brute force. This is deplorable because it is happening in an era where people are more aware. These fanatics just show that they are not religious, not even ritualistic, just menace-makers playing on people's fear of God.
