Exactly how zinc stops diarrhea is not entirely clear. Olivier Fontaine, a diarrhea specialist for the WHO, believes that since the mineral is an essential ingredient in about 300 enzymes, boosting zinc levels strengthens the body's immunity, thus preventing diarrhea from turning deadly. A single course apparently also staves off further bouts of diarrhea for about three months — long enough to see a community through the deadly rainy seasons. Contrast that with ORT, which is extremely effective in replacing fluids and nutrients but offers no quick end to the diarrhea itself. ORT has another drawback: crucially in cultures where seeing is believing, it offers no quick evidence that a patient is recovering

Scientists first hit on zinc's effectiveness in the early 1990s, when researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Md., gave children in New Delhi a daily dose of syrup containing 20 mg of zinc. The rate of diarrhea dropped dramatic

It is hard to grasp the impact diarrhea has on people's lives across Africa and Asia. The disease kills more children than either malaria or AIDS
Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belong the Kingdom of Heaven. - Matthew 19:14

Steve, I would ask politely that you do not turn the hard work and efforts of dedicated scientists, sociologists, and care givers into your proselytizing for christianity, Thank you. - Bobby Rutan 11:11

I think I'll manage my clips as I see fit to keep them on track and topical.

And as I see it this clip had absolutely nothing to do with religion and everything to do with international aid organizations, philanthropic organizations and good science.

Have a good day. Please come back when you have something to say related to the issues in my clip.

Actually, Bobby, I rather enjoyed reading your clip. I spent 3 years in Ethiopia and am interested in all things Africa, particularly those things that provide humanitarian assistance to children.

Thank you for asking, Bobby, but let me reassure you that I wouldn't dream of diminishing the wonderful work of these people.

And, I would especially not commit the sacrilege of falsely portraying Jesus as a Christian w...

Respectfully Steve, the clip has nothing to do with religion, Bible verses, Jesus, or Christianity.

Please stay on topic.

If you have anything you would like to say about diarrhea, diarrhea treatments, the World Health Organization, Save the Children, or the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation then please do so.
