This photo of Daguerre's came a dozen or so years after French inventor Nicéphore Niépce produced the first permanent photograph. I wonder what ever came of the guy getting his boots polished -- I'm sure he had no idea people would still be talking about him hundred of years later.

What about the boot polisher? He's quite visable and deserves equal fame. Why does everyone pretend he's not there? Discrimination?
