merrie says:
Because of onerous regulations, it has been 30-plus years since a new refinery has been built.

Similar regulations also explain why the U.S. nuclear energy production is a fraction of what it might be.

Congress' solution to our energy supply problems is not to relax supply restrictions, but to enact the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 that mandates that oil companies increase the amount of ethanol mixed with gasoline.

Anyone with an ounce of brains would have realized that diverting crops from food to fuel use would raise the prices of a host of corn-related foods, such as corn-fed meat and dairy products. Wheat and soybeans prices have also risen as a result of fewer acres being planted in favor of corn.

Congress' proposed "solutions" to the energy and food mess it has created include a windfall profits tax on oil companies, food stamps, etc. These measures will not solve the problem, but will create new problems.

"Anyone with an ounce of brains"....See merrie, that's the problem. I don't want to be too broad but it seems that a politician's brain is more geared to how they can make $$$ for themselves at our expense.

They also *can* make all the promises they want, which makes these Presidential candidates speeches all the more idiotic. They cannot deliver on 1% of what they are saying because once you hit the bureaucracy and gridlock in Washington, you can't change squat! They owe too much to the money pockets who got them there.

REP JOHN KASICH: -and I'll tell you, it's time for change.
COKIE ROBERTS: -but you say you want to stop politics as usual. The voters clearly think this is not only politics as usual, but it's Washington as usual, and the same old mess that they hate in Washington, and in our poll tonight, it's Republicans, 64 percent of the people say Republicans are playing politics with this.
REP JOHN KASICH: I know. Cokie, the easiest thing to do in this city is pass out money. That's why we're $5 trillion in debt.
COKIE ROBERTS: But nobody...
