I heard Neil deGrasse Tyson say on Nova Science podcast there was a strong likelyhood that this NEO could hit in the Pacific Ocean and send a 300 foot tsunami toward California. He may have been talking about another NEO, but his 30 year timeframe leads me to believe it the one listed in this clip. It's probably Apophis, I suppose. Some astronomers believe there is a high likelihood for a collision with the earth during its passage in 2036 (though many others say the probability is very low). But I don't know if it's possible to calculate the orbit so accurately and define the area of impact exactly. Pacific seems as a good candidate because of the huge area it covers, but I suppose, with a few hours delay it could strike to Atlantic, Africa or any other place. But wherever the impact occurs, it potentially effects every continent and every part of the world. A total nightmare. But I don't know if it's possible to calculate the orbit so accurately and define the area of impact exactly. That did occur to me when I heard it , but he IS Neil deGrasse Tyson and I barely passed Physics. ( college physics that is, high school physics was a breeze). I wonder...who can calculate Earth's next cataclysmic impact, and where it may strike? A NEO almost the size of Earth is beyond our normal expectations of NEOs. Our availing cosmos translates; ...even ten times the size of your planet Earth...a cataclysmic impact is ever probable... |
