willhelm says: I spent several hours out in the freezing, windy cold today with my camera, telephoto lens, binoculars, spotting scope, and a thermos of hot coffee trying to catch a glimpse of this owl. It is rare that they appear in Tennessee. I am resolved not to give up. Because of all the evergreen trees here the Gray Owl has become habituated to urban life. Sometimes at night, I can hear them calling during their hunt. (they make an unusual call) Congratulations on the success of your mission. They are truly beautiful!!! Great picture. Did you take it?? Since we have no snow, we don't have them but we do have a family who have made their nest in our neighbor's tree. Every late evening, between 5-6, they begin their hooting...though sometimes it doesn't sound like hooting but 'barking' as you described. Scared Littlest One to death, but now we look forward to hearing them. I've also seen one sitting over my pond in our pecan tree!! :~( I was sure he was searching out my pond, but the raccoons seem more perilous to my fish than the owls. :~) No, Jatfla, I did not take that picture. I did not even catch a glimpse of the bird. The picture in the clip is from wikipedia. good luck in your search for it. That is a beautiful bird. Good luck on your search. They are worth waiting for! Good luck, dress warm and have something warm to drink with you. Be sure to send to your local paper. Good Luck! I recently finished Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard, a great book that reveals though little success in discovering the elusive snow leopard nor of the rutting behaviour of Himalayan blue sheep, a primary purpose of the expedition, much unlooked for was discovered. Good luck and keep warm. I struck gold today. Here is a picture. I know the picture is not much to brag about but the view was spectacular through my spotting scope. I imagine the bird was 400 yards away ( maybe more, just a guess). My spotting scope certainly came in handy. The bird sat in place for about 45 minutes and swiveled it's head from side to side. I wanted to get closer but I was not feeling adventurous, seeing as how the property is private General Motors property. I'm going to try again to get a better shot with my camera. In this photo I used a Nikon D90 with a 300mm telephoto. It just wasn't quite enough. Oh well the search continues and, as... Congrats Willhelm. Thanks, mousie. |
