AtlLiberal says: How absurd for any religious group to expect for persons of differing faiths or no faith at all to adhere to their quaint religious practices. It reminds me of the resistance to teach evolution in public schools or the attempts to force religion into the public arena. Both spheres have a similar lack of credibility and rationale. Kudos to Wikipedia for not kowtowing to religious fanatics. 786 Absolutely. Wikipedia should be congratulated for standing it's ground. Perhaps, seeing as terrorists are mentioned in the previous posts, they should also be accepted in slinging along their wiki-views on wikipedia, as with criminal masterminds, dirty old men, politicians and advertisers. what a free world we live in. As Muslims, we are requested to avoid any sort of imagery which can lead to idolatry, so that we continue to worship the same single God as everyone else who follows a faith. It's a humble request that these images are left alone and not broadcast on the interwide-web thing. I hope that the other billion Muslims on earth will continue to use wikipedia as a source of... As Muslims, we are requested to avoid any sort of imagery which can lead to idolatryAnd says who? You know, if you watch yourself in a mirror long enough, it may lead you to idolatry. This petition thing has been started by some immature people and media (especially in the US) are just igniting the ignorance for the sake of publicity. Who in the world cares for any online petition?? What's a big deal about it to have shown up in NYTimes and the likes? Give me a break. There were no restrictions of such kind prior to 18-19 century. The hardliner almoravids and almohad dynasties have changed all that. The fundamentalists among Muslims have changed and have hardened the hearts of their own people. Give me a freaking break one more time. I'm sick and tired of all these illiterate and ignorant bullshits. The bigger problems are these Western media and journalists who have nothing better to do and report other than the ignorance and stupidity of those who do not know what they're talking about. It's a humble request that these images are left alone and not broadcast on the interwide-web thing.I disagree. It's an arrogant request that others abide by your rules and beliefs. we do not wish to impose a law, however, we would wish to have our sensitivities respected.By having people not affiliated with your faith being required to follow your laws? To my way of thinking, that is taking things to an extreme. Perhaps that is not what you meant? And what, may I ask, are you so "sensitive" about. If you're asking for common respect as a human being I have no problem whatsoever with that. If you're asking for respect for "ideas" that you hold, religious or... Ah, thanks then. Actually, sorry guys, I was tempted to just drop it, but your comments are valid, for this is how you feel. It breaks my heart to see the state of the world, let alone the state of Muslims, Hindus, Jews and all who call to a faith in God. We are not a perfect community. Regarding Sharia, there are 4 schools of law, I would be opposed to 3 of them. I am not opposed to the laws which prevent usury, which allow my taxes to fund wars in my name without the right to objection etc... I am not however an advocate of implimenting Sharia in the UK. This country offers me more protection than a so called Islamic state such as saudi Arabia may do. It is in our hearts to follow the law of this land. I speak for my community alone. Thoughts? People should be following the law of the land they live in. If the laws of the land conflict with your religious school of law (four in your example) then one must either move out of that land (if disagree) or reject the religious laws in favor of the land. My take. And just to add spice to the conversation, it's been reported in the news recently that the Archbishop of Canterbury has undergone criticism and calls for ouster over his mention of incorporating shari‘a law in English law. Evidently he's done this to smooth over recent perceptions of discrimination against Moslems. It might not be evident from the actions of our politicians in the US but we're supposedly a secular government. The British situation is, of course, different and I claim a vast ignorance on the details of how religion intersects with government in the UK. That being said, I'll admit that my preference is to have all governments secular, with no religious affiliations. It seem... Arifsali, I agree with you, and we do follow the law of our land. At the same time, i am able to follow the law of Sharia as much as I am compelled to do so; there is no conflict. You also discussed about vanity and idolatry. It was the prophet Muhammed (s.a.w) who requested that his image was not made, as this would lead to love of his image as a barrier to love of God. He know's human nature. An example is how the Prophets Buddha, Krishna and Jesus have become idolised and turned into gods through religious iconography. A muslim viewpoint, and in conflict with that of Buddhists, Hindus and Christians, for we take these men as prophets of God. I mean no offence to you. Perhaps, the d... |
