A combination of political libertarianianism and Christian influence ( Christian influence led the opposition to slavery in exactly the same way they lead the opposition to another materialist evil today - abortion) to garner the political will to isolate and defeat the confederacy ( the same combination was applied by Reagan and the Pope to defeat Progressive Materialism in the former Soviet Union. . It should also be remembered the slavery was a materialist enterprise, just like communism, socialism, abortion, socialogical propaganda, etc.

#4 Absolutley. You get no argument from me here . The New Deal was progressive and it was exactly the reason the US depression deepened while the rest of the world emerged from it. The New Deal was the eartly century infatuation with mobilized society. A massive failure of such a large scale that we are paying for it today.
