Iceland also gives official recognition to their Nordic Pagans. I think it's great they're doing that but, I find the shape of the grave site an odd choice. A Norse custom was to send the body out to sea on a boat, setting it on fire once it was off shore. A funeral pyre at sea. The grave site is probably meant to simulate this custom, since they can't "ship them out" anymore. A number of burials were on land with mounds raised over the ships (remember Sutton Hoo). Tom Holt exploited that in his comic novel "Who's Afraid Of Beowulf?". Thank you, Jorjor! I didn't know that. |
