To be honest. The so called cheap flights are still pretty new here in Europe. Until 2003 or so, we only had the high prices that you are dreading. The difference is that we still have an extensive train network, which is extremely fast (Amsterdam Paris in 1h 41min and only 5 minutes to check in), and is only getting faster.
