Socratoad says:
Provide cover. Birds need shelter from harsh conditions, and vegetation in your yard will help to furnish it. Don’t prune back dead vegetation like vines and stalks – these provide both valuable winter cover and nesting material for birds in the spring. Balconies have a special opportunity to attract nesting birds as they provide great shelter.

Add habitat in your backyard in the form of a brush pile, which may attract foraging birds and mammals, and even over-wintering reptiles, amphibians and insects.

I had this nice little bird feeder in my backyard and the little wrens came in first, so nice to watch, then the cardinals chased off the wrens, but they were so beautiful, and then the robins chased off the cardinals and I mused about how they should have been our state bird, and then the doves chased off the robins, and then I noticed a falcon sitting on my fence eyeballing my poodle and I took the damn bird feeder down.

I too, had hawk visits. Living in a landscaped condo is hard to make anything permanent. It is mostly open. I had to find some bushes to put the feed under. Mr, Cooper's Hawk hasn't been seen lately. You know the squirrels are going to get at those yummy seeds anyway, so I just put out enough for all. I buy more seeds & peanuts than some people buy dog food! lol
And thanks everyone for loving our little creatures.

You are a kind soul Socra!!!...............

I just installed a martin house............16 apartments 20 ft off the ground..........I am going to call it:
"GOVERNMENT HOUSING 4-the BIRDS"

Maybe the government will subsidize the
wild bird seed.!
