Leon Kass, the former head of Bush's Council on Bioethics, insists that “the finitude of human life is a blessing for every human individual”. Bioethicist Daniel Callahan of the Garrison, New York-based Hastings Centre, agrees: “There is no known social good coming from the conquest of death.”

Maybe they’re right, but then why do we as humans strive so hard to prolong our lives in the first place? Maybe growing old, getting sick and dying is just a natural, inevitable part of the circle of life, and we may as well accept it.

"But it's not inevitable, that's the point,"

One wonders what Methuselah would say about all this.

"Six-hundred years on this job, two-hundred-fifty to go. I haven't had a promotion in over a century and now they're saying I have another hundred years to go before I can get that third week of vacation. On top of all that, now they hired some idiot hundred seventy five year old kid to be department head, telling me I haven't been keeping up enough with the technology when I just got my twenty-third computer science degree seventy-one years ago! What's a guy have to do to get ahead in this dump?! "

Um, no thanks.

Yeah, I don't think I could take a 1000 yrs; I think we should try and sort out the food/air/water issues, first. Then again . . Sutton United may - if given enough time - win the F.A. Cup . . nah, maybe 2,000 years.
Anyone seen the movie "Zardoz"?

Zardoz was, in my opinion, a sleeper of a classic. Yea, it was weird and all, but it was GREAT!

Once you get used to Sean Connery in those tiny briefs - which doesn't take as long as one might expect - it certainly merits classic (sci-fi) status. With the announcement of (the possibility) of a 1,000 year life span the movie is edging closer to a prophetic status.
