Its not the same to speak conversational Spanish (or for that matter any language) than studying it at school. Otherwise they would be no English courses at schools or universities in the United States.

These students will be approaching the subject with some knowledge and some confidence. That is how all people should be able to approach learning. Isn't that why we were in grade three before we went to grade four.

Yeah, but isn't the whole point to teach them to be fluent at a collegiate level in the language of the country they live in - not articulate in Spanish, which they already know?

With an emphasis on "this country." What if I *legally* moved to France and they decided to teach me Upper Level English? Would that even make a lick of sense?

Yes, it would. Its a language after all. Mastering a language gives a student confidence and who better than those who have a head start. Nowhere does it say that they are not being taught English as well.

This is just very very thinly disguised racism. Sure its easy to press a hot issue button and hope that everyone will get too pissed off to actually use their brains, but this attempt was pathetic at best.

We offer and even up to a certain level, require English and later, AP English in every school I've ever been to or heard of, and most Americans have been fluent speakers of American English since early childhood.

Think about it, most 10-12 yr. old children can speak our language well enough to get by in any everyday situation that comes up. They can ask for anything necessary to fulfill their basic needs and most of their wants.

This seems like a pathetic attempt to bolster som...
