Could it be that a one world common language might just be what the doctor ordered to cure all that ails us?
10-18-2009 1:31 PM
Socratoad
And that language would be?

kenstipe
Why does it matter?

Well ken, perhaps it does not matter, however methinks it might generate some interesting discussion

For example Esperanto might be one choice because its relatively easy to learn. Plus such a choice might lesson the "cultural domination" argument

On the other hand Asians might very well disagree that Esperanto is an easy to learn language.

Tis a conundrum

It seems like to me that you are suggesting it might be a requirement to force upon people. That is totalitarian thinking. That is not what I'm saying at all. Did you even read your own clip. It is about languages dying, not being discarded. There is human societal evolution that we should not necessarily resist. I don't think like a totalitarian so it's hard to engage your comment, but I tend to assume that there is no value in a language that dies, otherwise it probably would not have died.

I'm not suggesting using force or coercion of any kind, however if you believe that the dying out of languages is always an evolutionary process then so be it .....

And yes I read my own clip, perhaps I misunderstood your stance, thinking you might be the one going off on a tangent

No, not going off on a tangent. I think languages dying is a good thing. A unifying thing. Maybe in 500 years humans can whittle them down to 2 or 3. That would be a good thing.

Death of any language means extinction of a particular, genuine way of thinking and feeling. In Hamburg Low Saxon (Plattdüütsch), which is my vernacular, I can think and communicate certain thoughts and emotions which the registers of standard German would not fit, and vice versa. Language is not only means of expression, furthermore, it preforms thinking.
Diversity and authenticity of human thinking, feeling and communicating is a cultural hoard that should be regarded worthy of preservation.
I have nothing against English as global interlanguage (nothing efficacious anyhow ), but I'd prefer Latin. Lingua Latina vivit, vivat lingua Latina!

The very fact that you "prefer" a language over another demonstrates that the rest of your comment is non-thinking gibberish. Is the ancient Roman way of thinking and feeling extinct because no one speaks Latin in regular practice? Why is it better than Spanish, English, Mandarin....? How does 'blow it out your ass' translate in Latin? There is nothing intrinsically valuable about a language. Communication is more than language anyway. Would be less bigoted toward someone who spoke to you in Latin or German? Yes, you probably would. Bigotry makes one a slave to the trivial things. Let's invent a new language...we'll call it "newspeak".

But that would be most unfair you hateful little man as you are already much more proficient in newspeak than anyone this side of the talking heads at Faux news

Now go tell your mummy she wants you

Give me an example.

Anyway, I agree with you in regard to kenstipe's comment. I just don't think you can rank languages on a scale of value and I don't believe they have intrinsic value. They do have cultural value, but culture changes and adapts. Ken makes a good point...if the language dies, then that probably is because the culture is dying. What is wrong with that?

O Willhelme, gallus in suo sterquilino plurimum potest. Hic vero advenisti, ubi ferrum rodunt mures. Ergo tu desine fatuari.
you "prefer" a language over another
I do. What is wrong with it? Are you afraid I would put a ban on English language if I were a ruler of the world? I can comfort you: I am not the latter and I would not do the former.
How does 'blow it out your ass' translate in Latin?
This seems to be an important question of yours. Okay, here you are: flatulare.
As an open-minded cosmopolitan that you are, you might receive the following list with cheers:
Afrikaans: poep
Bulgarian: пускам газове
Spanish: peerse, soltar un pedo, pedorrear
I...

I don't care any more for the English language than I do any other, except for the selfish fact that it is the only one I speak with any acceptable level of proficiency. You can ban it all you want. Oh, and thank you for the informative comment. It might prove quite useful.
