kristenjo says: So um, I just upgraded the hardware on this computer, which is a Compaq, and I'm not having any major problems, but It decided when I installed the new hard drive (old hard drive not plugged in) that it would name it I instead of C. No apparent reason. It had a bunch of crazy letters assigned to the removeable media drives and I changed them, but you can't change a boot drive. More than anything I'm curious why it's being stupid. You get a little peek into my crazy musical world, too, as a bonus for being you. OMG, Avril Lavigne???? Really. Windows does some funky stuff sometimes. Perhaps you at one point had a monitor with multiple USB ports plugged into it? You and I are far apart on the music spectrum. This may cause a rift in our relationship. OK, first of all, Adam, I'm not on my computer, so not all the music on this computer is mine. I can't account for the Avril. Please see the playlist on the left of the screen...Avril-free. And B) there's no way we can be that far apart on the music spectrum, Wolf, unless you listen to polka and techno only. On that playlist alone there was rock, metal, R&B, rap, pop, country, gospel, rockabilly, acoustic folk, punk(ish), and 80's cheese. That's not even a good survey of the plethora of music I have. Just ask Jason. Geez As an independent, unbiased, third-party counsel, I can verify that Kristen's fetish for Ms. Levigne's work in no ways reflects her deep, diverse, cultured, well-informed, nuanced, unmatched taste in music. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for her taste in desktop backgrounds. kristenjo said:Probably because it already had its C to H drives named, which made I a logical choice. Are you sure you can't change a boot drive? Can't change the boot drive unless I convert it to dynamic, and since I really don't know what all that would do, I didn't do it. I just know that I didn't have any other hard drives plugged in (not even the old one), I completely cleared the CMOS/BIOS, and when I installed Windows on the new one, It named it I. I can't count the number of times I've replaced a hard drive just like I did this one, and it renamed it C. Of course it is only the second time I've worked with a pre-configured system as opposed to one my dad or I built. And now it won't let me change the home page on IE. I love my mother, but I hate when she insists on using crap for programs. Figured that last one out. Norton in its infinite wisdom was blocking that action and not telling me about it until I booted in safe mode. Brilliant. kristenjo said:That is pretty weird, but it's a Compaq, so you shouldn't be too surprised I have one of those drive docks on mine instead of a floppy. My c drive is normal. I have 8 drives in my computer Yeah, Djiezes, Compaq sure knows how to screw up hardware. It has this software (Compaq Connections, aka CRAP) that is apparently hardwired into the motherboard or something, because even after I cleared the BIOS and put the new drive in it, it runs. My friend Norton informed me that it accesses the internet regularly. It's backdoor central on that POS. |
