AcesLucky says: So many translations; so many interpretations; but sometimes they all say essentially the same thing... women are second class citizens... thus saith the Lord. Is the word of god "subject to" the culture of the times? Or do we change the interpretation of god's word to fit our sensibilities at the time? Perhaps we create god's word as we go. Certainly our interpretation does. Galatians 3:27-29 (King James Version) 27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. @alanocu When Christ was crucified and dead on the cross . . . and all of His men had denied Him or gone home . . . it was women who stayed with Him until the bitter end . . . and it was to a woman that He first revealed the good news of His Resurrection. Sure I do. Though I'm not sure what it has to do with the statements in the clip. @alancou, It was this verse exactly that began my feminist awakening as a young teen and turned me away from Christianity. In my parent's church, the pastor's wife felt "called" to be a minister. The church decided that this was unbiblical because of Paul's words. The pastor and his wife divorced, the church split, and I was done with organized religion. @Honoradele 27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
The statements from Galatians are not a contradiction of the clips above, but suppose it is. If we were to eliminate every passage that can be contradicted by another passage made after it... How much of the bible would be left? What would be the remaining message? Of course it might heavily depend on "who" is making the statements, too. ... They're good people in my opinion. I may not personally believe in God, but I try and respect the beliefs of others and if possible, learn from the diverse beliefs. I also don't mind standing up for someone if they're being attacked for their religious beliefs.Well said! @alanocu The clipped content is very persuasive. Knowing a little about the Bible, I'm suggesting that the information is lacking to be considered informative. There are plenty others concerning the treatment of women. How many would it take to be convinced that biblically speaking, women are considered "less" than men? Would you like passages regarding women as: witches sex objects slaves wives chattel temptresses whores the "devil's gateway" menstruation unclean ... what? Pick one and I'll show you a biblical second class treatment. Women aren't even supposed to learn, except from their husbands. And since women have the highest recorded (standard) I.Q.'s, that seems k... @alanocu I also don't mind standing up for someone if they're being attacked for their religious beliefs.I agree! Prey tell. Am I attacking someone, or a biblical philosophy that women are inherently inferior to men? @alancou, I agree with everything you said. I wasn't a PK, but my parents raised me in a fundamentalist church. I must admit that I spent many years angry, but I'm also older and beyond that now. I don't believe in God, nor do I go to church, but I now join my parents at church on Christmas (if we're in the same city). (And I actually meant to direct my original comment to Aces, but I enjoy chatting with you) I think it's pretty obvious that the Bible contradicts itself too much to actually be the literal word of God. Just try looking up Jesus' various lineages sometime. Any attempt to force an absolutely consistent reading on this disparate collection of texts written over thousands of years and in two different languages is doomed to failure. And often doomed to devolve into a tyrannical ideology. |
