A larger part of the problem, which isn't addressed in the article, is that George W. Bush was basically nuts. When the conflict is crazy people v. crazy people, it's a lot easier for one group of crazies to convince people their cause is just.

Now it's sane people v. crazy people. The battle for public opinion just got a lot harder for al Qaeda.
