An endoscope (fibrescope) is a long, usually flexible tube with a lens at one end and a telescope at the other. Endoscopy - from "endo," (beneath the surface) and "scope" (see) - allows surgeons to operate through coin-sized openings in the body, rather than large incisions. Using miniaturized telescopes, fiber-optic light, and special instruments, surgeons can reduce operating time, trauma, and post-operative discomfort. Endoscopy allows the doctor to not only see the inside of the digestive tract, but also to take small samples (biopsies) of tissue for further examination under a microscope .
