I go back to the days when gay bars were located in dingy areas, with blackened windows so no one could see in, and plain clothes cops looking to entrap customers. Those days, thank heaven, are over. Gay bars became glitzy, mainstream and very exciting. But now, it appears that due to the rise in acceptance of gays and lesbians in our society, the need for gay bars has dropped. Many gay people are now coupled, with children and are busy with the same kind of stuff heterosexuals have been preoccupied with forever. Sure, there will always be some gay bars, and that's fine, just as straight bars have not gone out of business. But the need for these establishments is far less urgent than previously.

This is an interesting article Zazel. I luv gay bars and don't see them disappearing at all; speaking for myself, I see a lot of straight women going to gay bars more frequently. For one thing, it's a safe environment, it's fun, if you like to dance you can dance all night long without being hit on by men and that's a plus if you are already in a committed relationship and just want to have fun with your female friends without men thinking that you are in a bar to be available to them, and all that hassel. But then again, I'm located in a more rural area and that may not reflect itself here as much as it does the city night life. How do you feel about it?

I understand exactly what you mean Deb, when you talk about straight women patronizing gay bars for a fun night out. I have known about this for years, and the phenomenon seems to grow all the time. Women love the freedom to dance and socialize without having to be concerned with being hit on all night. I know many women who also enjoy having gay male friends for similar reasons, plus, they find their gay friends to me more sensitive to their issues and ideas. The lack of sexual tension makes a very real difference.

Where do you live? I would guess that in rural areas gay bars are so few that they cannot afford to lose any. But I have found that in big cities such as New York, Montreal, ...

I live in rural West Virginia, but there is a gay bar in the nearest college town, and a simple google search turns up this, but it's from 2006 and good grief I've never heard of some of these bars (you learn something every day

Anyway, you would be right in assuming that they cannot afford to lose any bars with such a small population.

The bars are going the way of the bookstores. drying up, we won't notice we need them until they are all gone and we will have to fight all over again from scratch.
