I cannot but agree with the essential point that much criticism of Israel and Zionism from the Left is barely disguised distaste for Jewishness. Read the article, see what you think.

What if I acknowledge the real and true horrors of the Holocaust perpetrated by the German government enabled by Western feebleness and even tacit support, and then ask why the Palestinians were the ones punished for this crime by having their houses and land taken away to make a Jewish state? Am I an anti-Semite?

Strange logic at the end of the article, suggesting that opposition to a colonial Jewish state in the Middle East equates with opposition to Jewish people being anywhere. It is similar to saying that opposition to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait is similar to opposition to Iraqis being anywhere.

we find motifs of anti-Zionism that are popular these days in parts of the left and parts of the Muslim and Arab worlds:

above from article. The 'punishing palestinians for the holocaust' is an old, old motif and used these days by those who want Israel not to exist. Sad really in a week when Peres and Abbas shared a platform in Turkey to look forward to solutions, and when this weekend Palestinians and Israelis are meeting in London to discuss a One State solution. Sad, that while the majority of Palestinians and Israelis want a just peace, there is still talk of Israel's right to exist. Sad when so many years of working against the odds on the slow road to accommodation there is still a n...

It is "victim's mentality" at its worse. Its time the world had a genuine debate about Israel/Palestine, with full recognition of the historical, political and military facts of the then and now. Only by been honest on all sides can peace occur. Until then....

Count me in as a leftie who does not support the state of Israel. I am not anti-Semitic, but because I don't think Zionism should have to dictate the entire world's peace, I get labeled that way (sometimes). However, there are plenty of Jewish people who agree with me. I think the entire area should be cordoned off with police tape or made into a international park. It is a wicked piece of land that had led to nothing but bloodshed.

"We may be saying different prayers but our eyes are turned toward the same sky and toward the same vision for the Middle East," Peres said.

"If there is peace between Israel and the Palestinians and the occupation of Arab lands ends, Israel will also live in a sea of peace, security and stability in the Middle East," Abbas said.

"There will no longer be wars ... and all the peoples in the region will live in security and stability," he said, becoming the first Palestinian president to address the Turkish legislature.
