travislaborde says: He's right. Even for someone as closed-minded as myself, I must admit that Clipmarks and the comments, and the weight of having my own comments read, has helped to change my mind ever so slightly on some topics. As an example - Anyone reading my posts is probably aware of my opinion on Islam as a "Religion of Peace." Already you'll have noticed this is the first time I've given Islam a capital "I." The truth is, if some subset of Christianity were frothing lunatics, suicide bombers, and complete nut jobs, the reaction from the rest of us would be much the same as what we're seeing from any non-violence promoting Muslims. We'd say that those nutjobs don't represent Christ's church. And we'd pray for them. It's unfair of me to discredit those that say Islam is a religion of peace, simply because of the lunatics we always hear about. Of course, that's not to say that I think Islam is right. Any religion that teaches anything other than "Jesus is God robed in flesh" is in And one of the things that I've had to come to grips with since a member of Clipmarks, is that I feel challenged to "re-think" my feelings on topics. Not that it's a bad thing. But there is a fine line between feeling offended by another's comments on a political topic (for example) vs realizing that I might be reading something that may trip a resistance to a "change of thought." Which almost inevitably causes stirred feelings. Once I realized this, it opened the door to feeling more comfortable to converse maturely and as intellectually as I can. Or switch to another Clipmark. I think this little revelation (for me) will keep me out of trouble. Interessting, I don't participate much to political subjects but it sure is nice to communicate like this, makes me think about this experiment now going on: Empoyers have to engage people without knowing how they look... makes me think about this experiment now going on: Empoyers have to engage people without knowing how they look...what i find interesting about this as it pertains to clipmarks is that i definitely find myself more attracted to clipmarks that are posted by people who have uploaded profile images. it pretty much doesn't matter what the image looks like...just makes me feel more interested in knowing about what they posted. anyone else feel this way? I agree Eric... being able to place a face and a little bit of info with someone makes a world of difference because suddenly the communication becomes more personal. ( to those who enjoyed my absence the last few days, it's all over now. It's unfair of me to discredit those that say Islam is a religion of peace, simply because of the lunatics we always hear about. This is where I think you're justified - if the lunatics did as they do and the rest of the religion totally and vocally and publically opposed it - I don't think you'd feel the same way... I know I wouldn't... but since you don't hear anything like that and see all of these terrible acts being committed - you feel the way you do. And you're absolutely right - any other religion doing the same would qualify for the same sentiments. egoldstein said:You're very right about having 'human' element added when there's some sort of imagery associated with a name. And photos I think are the strongest symbols of bringing some warmth to the environment. I mentioned in another clip a new voice-mail system on the Web and on the surface it's just a voice-mail with photos, but these photos are what... We're right, they're wrong. You can see and hear it everyday about almost everything. As unfortunate as it might seem - that's the way it is. And I think there are a number of reasons for it. First, as many people point out, it would be boring if everyone agreed... a point which certainly has some merit (although it certainly doesn't justify flying a plane full of people into a building to make a point). Second, for minds to be influenced and/or changed - the people need to be totally open-minded and that's definitely not the case with too many people and that's partially due to upbringing, religion, character, peers, power, money - you name it - there's always an agenda ... |
