I find shock jocks distasteful for the most part, but the problem as I see it is that there is a portion of America that wants that type of radio. Imus' comments were terrible and outrageous. Imus deserves vilification and should apologize and take his lashes on the Al Sharpton's church steps, just like Henry II. However, Sharpton is wrong to ask the FCC to censor Imus. Imus employers should not fire Imus because Al Sharpton is bringing pressure. They should only fire him if his ratings go down or they want something else, but not because of political pressure. Al should know better. Free speech is free speech no matter how reprehensible. I do not argue that Imus should not be held accountable or be forced do the right thing. But you can't argue that some people can speak and some can't. Nazi's and KKK members and all those o... "Free speech" does not give one carte blanche to embarass your advertisers, employers etc. Imus was on a public show and public airwaves. He is NOT paid to spew his own personal racism. |
