Anyone on CM who follows me knows I am quite passionate about this particular subject. Making the biblical case against homosexuality is, in my opinion, and many respected biblical scholars, hard to prove. Indeed, for all the huffing and puffin of born-again Christians, it is significant that in all His public denunciations Jesus Christ never ONCE mentioned homosexuality. In fact, He didn't say ONE word about it. In the end, for a person of faith, zeroing in on one or several passages of the Bible for clues on how to deal with homosexuality is the wrong approach. But let's discuss what Jesus did say. He had plenty to say about divorce, and in no uncertain terms. Except for marital unfaithfulness, he said it was a sin to divorce--and remarry. It seems pretty clear to me that anyone who would zero on passages of the Bible which condemn homosexuality and ignore those that condemn divorce are people who find it very convenient to point out those sins they are not guilty of.

That being said, nobody can, or should, try to force churches to follow what the state must do. Based on their beliefs, and their reading of Scripture, some churches will recognize and perform same sex marriages, and some won't. Knowing that, people can choose whichever church they want to attend.

Yes, and we get to pick & choose which sins we want to acknowledge and condemn. s/off

"...But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound."

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

All sin is sin; none more offensive to the Creator God than any other. The issue is to recognize, and not deny, what the Scriptures call 'sin'.

My daughter divorced. It has caused horrible grief and suffering for *everyone*. It was sin, pure and simple. God never says 'no' without a reason and it's always to provide us with the best opportunities for happiness.

I couldn't agree more Jatfla! I could go through it point by point why the unfortunate reality of reflecting the times in which it was written, traces of both primitive attitudes towards sex in general can be found throughout Scripture. For example with Leviticus it's an all or nothing proposal if you believe in literal interpretation, and once you add up all the no, no's, it has to be nothing or else we'd all be targed for execution. In King's the "sin" was not homosexuality but prostitution practiced in a place of worship if you take a closer look at the translation of sodomite. Take a closer look a...

"Sin' is culturally weighted with condemnation, yet the way of seeing it as 'error' or 'missing the target' perhaps more precisely catches the sense of sin as a begetter of woes, rather as the Buddhist notion of karma.

Always provoking Deb.Let me say this though in defence of the gay/lesbian issue. It is the year 2007, and we have evolved way passed Hebrew sheep herders.Jesus Christ himself would today at the very least own a cell phone. Why do we all live in a 2000 year old past?
If these churches retain any support at all, let's leave the pedo priest issue alone for now,it's because of the social club that is attached to it.Sunday brunch etc...
Dante invented hell not God. Why are we so afraid to progress? I could kiss a gay guy right now on the butt for having the courage most of us lack, and while I am not myself gay,I am certainly not a homophode.

Once again, Abailard shows his stuff - conservative religion is hot about what conservative culture is hot about, not what the Bible is hot about; and certainly not what Jesus Christ - "the perfect representation of God in human form" according to the Bible - is hot about. Those things that conservatism seems to care most about reflect a set of values that could be perfectly intact if Jesus Christ had never lived, never appeared in the Bible, never set an example for humans to follow. His example perfects and clarifies the Bible; the Bible does not perfect and clarify him.
