I would like to see these people go to jail for a long time. They hurt many people.

I so agree, as I believe many elderly folks get snared in these kinds of scams.

I get at least two calls a month from somewhere in the U.S. saying, "Congratulations, you have just won a free cruise to.....) That's where I hang up. Another thing that happens and I'm deeply ashamed of is the amount of scams originating in my own country bilking money from Sr citizens in the U.S. Why do they always target the people who can least afford it.

I usually hang up after they launch into their "pitch"

The problem is that not enough people hang up when they launch their "pitch". I've learned to hang up before or just as the "pitch" begins.
