Think this is is related to the tendency to think metonymically. A metonym is the taking a part of something for a whole. It's a pervasive and important - and completely 'normal' - way of thinking, and enables us to make 'quick and dirty' or r 'rule of thumb' appraisals without too much thinking. It leads to problems as suggested above, and is one of the hallmarks of things like negative thinking in anxiety and depression. In discussions it is endemic and a logician can easily show errors of argument based on illegitimate metonymic claims. Very good abailart.. In the end it is the difference between a moralistic and scientific approach to understanding why we do what we do. We like to think of ourselves as indepentent agents doing the bidding of our own free will and responsible for our own actions.. Model Americans.. As for responsibility, we attribute that to choice and choice to volition, will, or self-control.. No matter that the physical world provides no room for freedom of will: that concept is essential to our models of the mental realm. We expect that in order to attain our goals, the desire to play must be deferred while we go to work, short term goals must often be deferred to achieve long term goals, etc....... |
