Women face higher social risks when negotiating higher wages. Not being able to pay the bills, keep a home, and put food on the table, in my opinion are higher risks. In the face of these responsibilities, I would hope women would get more gutsy (I'd say ballsy but then that is a male-gendered word) and start demanding what is rightfully theirs.
