In another take on "pro-life" this blogger makes an interesting argument that people who oppose abortion should naturally support gay marriage: because it will increase the number of homes (two-parent homes, mind you) willing to adopt children. It's a rational idea, and rather radical too, if you put it together with the idea of encouraging committed monogamous relationships among gays and lesbians. The next logical step? Encourage same-sex couples to have families.

Of course the major problem with this is that reason will appeal to many of the people who ware anti-choice, anti-gay, and anti-equality.

Gay marriage = fewer abortions is one of the spurious and over-simplistic linkages I've read in a long time. I don't even know where the best place to start might be in this argument.

Wow, GD thanks for adding to the clip! *sarcasm*

Thought the idea from afar looks like it is useful.. I mean, yes if there were more gay couples out there able to adopt, it would help alleviate (to a SMALL) degree the overwhelming need for more adoptions. However, I don't think this should be an argument FOR gay marriage. I think the only real argument that counts is that I believe it is their right to be married.

FYI: there are already thousands of cases of gay couple (both married and un-married) adopting children...

Thus it is with much nonsense that is revealed as such upon closer inspection.

GD!! Unfair! Although there was unfairness on both sides there.

I do think this proposition is overly simple, as I said above, not least because trying to claim a correlation between 'option to adopt' and 'lower likelihood of choosing to abort' is questionable. I can see how someone came up with the notion thoough.

How am I being unfair?

Coming up with notions is easy, Anon, anyone can do it. It's good that the notions be rational though.

The back-biting, I was referring too.

Oh indeed. But there's no fun in that either - and how would anyone ever do a doctorate if there wasn't the odd 'irrational' notion!

Ooops, BBcode did something a little silly there.

You've stumbled on a solution to doctoral glut.

And re the "backbiting"-- I thought I was making a valid point.

You think there are too many people doing doctorates?
