abailart says: <<<Some people will say that I just don’t have a sense of humor. I do, but not when the joke is at someone else’s expense. The media keeps undermining the efforts of many of us and there is no way that we can effectively reduce the stigma associated with bipolar disorder, or any mental illness, when the media keeps using the term to ridicule others >>> (from source). Perhaps all illnesses can be sources of humour, by the sufferers and others. Often it is 'innocent' enough. Nevertheless, I do feel the general point made above is worth thinking about. The Onion jokes about everything. I am not sure I agree but I see your point. And trust me,no one will think that you don't have a sense of humor. Its a disgrace and libel abailart, Don't water it down. An insult is an insult. To belittle the mentally ill, is like with any other prejudice, it's a sign of stupidity and insecurity. Give me a mentally ill person with integrity anyday over the crooks and thieves we have in our government and big business. Hi chestnut. Have a look at this morning's blog from a psychiatrist who works in North Carolina: http://www.bluetoblue.org/ She or he found the Onion 'hilarious'. I wonder how anyone would feel to know their serious condition provides their doctor with the opportunity for hilarity. Would a doctor dealing with, say, cancer roar laughing at the possible jokes the condition affords? |
