The way I've been doing it I've learned because I've had to, rather than because I should, It's kept most of what I've learned directly related to what i'm doing. What I can probably say in summary, is there it the answer to just about any question on the net, but It helps never to have a pen and paper too far away. Perhaps so after I've reinstalled a system, I can remember what the question was.- (Sometimes a question can have a 32digit character string).
I recently bought a new laptop, and my logic was give the old one a 'run for it's money' What I've learned as a result helped me get features on the laptop that would help avoid some of those problems.
When I started using the computer, viruses started off as a mystery, and were 'everywhere', but since linux has been a motive to learn more about the way computers and programs work (a thing windows seems determined to prevent) they don't seem to be nearly as much of a threat, and antivirus programs are updated with new virus profiles almost as soon as they have left the computer of the black hat.
Still it pays never to be complacent.
