Certain sexual predators should be in jail for life. Others, an innocent 17 year old having sex with someone who is 16 sort of thing. A lot of these students entering university still appear like they did in high school, and as such may fall prey to these predators. More needs to be done to protect them, no matter if it creates "different problems" for them or not; they did not have a an issue with causing problems for the victim, why should I care if we cause problems for them now?

It depends on the nature of the offender's previous offense and whether or not he/she posses a threat to the students. Otherwise, I see no problem with people on the sex offender registry living near a college campus. Also, college students are young adults. As such, they require no more protection than you or I.

Convicted sex offender doesn't mean the same thing it used to.
Too many people ahve been labeled for silly reasons.
I know 3 young men in our town of 4437 people that are labeled because they turned 18 and had GF that turned 17.
Theres more - what about the girl that wants to stir up shit so she leads on a 19yo and the cries foul.

You can be labeled a sex offender for owning porn nowadays. It just too general and soon there will be nobody allowed to live near anything.

Sex offender registries are full of people, many of them teenagers, whose crime was breaking some trivial and antiquated statutory offense. While many insist upon the incorrigible pathology of some sex offenders, it should be noted that many of our sex laws are also rooted in pathology. The recent trend of prosecuting teenagers who cell phone explicit pictures of the themselves is a case in point. Prosecutors assume serious offenses where their are none except by some antiquated legal mind set. The law's net is cast too broadly in this witch hunt for sex offenders with politicians, the media, and sexual neurotics leading the way. The law is, as always, an ass.
