According to the original scheme of things as established in the Constitution, the runner-up candidate became veep. If that were still in effect, we would now have an Obama-McCain administration instead if Obama-Biden. Hey, so long as Palin was well out of the equation, having McCain as a VP wouldn't be all that scary. Dire, but not all that scary. Vice Presidents are not picked because they are bright, literate, etc. They are picked to bring in the vote from a certain segment of the voting public or to pay off political debts owed. Look at just the Vice Presidents picked in the 20th Century. As John Adams wrote: "My country has in its wisdom contrived for me the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived." (Upon being elected as the first Vice President) Which Satchamo, begs the question, who voted for Obama because Biden was in the ticket? |
