People want to believe something so bad that not only do they ignore anything that contradicts it, but they will discard their own common sense and risk their health/lives.

Ha! I missed the very first part and began reading of this London housewife/snake handler. Wow, I thought. I thought the British were more sophisticated than this. Then I saw the reference to London, Ky.

Is is a surprise that this woman lives in the state that also is home to the Creationist Museum? Tune up those banjos.

That's one more death in the name of religion and God. How many are too many?

Least it was self inflicted. It's when they cause the pain/death to others in the name of their religion that is intolerable.

I'm not sure that it makes much of a difference. A part of me also believes that this person got what they deserved but the more humane part still feels empathetic towards this useless loss of life. I'm willing to bet that this woman was raised in an environment that was not conducive to open discussion or inquiry into questioning matters of faith. And pity her children (if she had any) both for the loss and for the abusive teaching they probably received.

That's what makes beliefs like this so persistent. I've often stated that this is not only a cultural problem but a generational problem.

I agree, AtlLiberal. I even see a parallel between religion and that of racism. Until those generations of racists died off then there could be no real equality and acceptance.

I do have a limited sympathy for believers in that I was one once. However when I began to see that things didn't add up I took the initiative and found out why. Just as when many people saw racial abuse and concluded that it just had to be wrong, they began to work towards the end of it.

So through time and education I think we will see the hold of religion loosen and fade as older generations pass away and new generations are educated. If a couple of these people manage to stupidly kill themselv...

Alternately, there could also be an evolution of religion till the religion of the future only palely resembles the tenets of today. After all, they did, for the most part, get rid of that sacrificial altar business.

But will it be any truer than religion today or yet one more version of a cherry picked belief system? Is mankind so flawed that it relies upon mythology rather than facing reality? I fear that it cannot, but hope that it does.

I was thinking perhaps that it might morph into something more in common with Buddhism or some other form of discipline that doesn't rely on supernatural causes. Just thinking out loud...
